Algeria Enacts Total Cryptocurrency Ban with Criminal Penalties
Algeria has implemented one of the world's most stringent cryptocurrency prohibitions through Law No. 25-10, effective July 24, 2025. The legislation categorizes all digital asset activities—including trading, mining, and promotion—as criminal offenses punishable by imprisonment and fines up to $7,000.
The law specifically targets mining operations in southern provinces where energy subsidies are highest, while simultaneously banning advertising and platform operations. Algeria now joins a small group of nations imposing absolute crypto bans, framing digital assets exclusively as tools for illicit finance.
